In my opinion a discourse audience is defined as a group of people with whom you write, speak or debate. The people who are able to relate to what you’re saying, whether you’re debating or writing. Everyone has a similar goal. A discourse group is a collection of people that share common interests. Because people are a part of more than one discussion community, it is vital to understand the concept. Registered nurses play an important role in the care of patients. They help prevent disease, promote health, and assist with managing illness. Nursing is a way to support the patient and their families in restoring health and reducing suffering. Swales’ six-characteristic rule states that a nursing community can be categorized as a discussion group. This group is characterized by common goals and uses genres, modes of communication or intercommunication to achieve their goals.

Most nurses understand the common goals of nurses. Common goals, for example, include caring for patients and performing the necessary responsibilities throughout the shift. Some rules apply to all nurses. These rules may vary from one place to another and can include things like agreements and paperwork between state healthcare laws, and nurses who wish to practice there. To do their jobs, nurses must be able to communicate. They also need to make sure that other nurses and medical personnel understand important patient information. Nursing programs are constantly adding new students because there is always a need for nurses. These students receive training and instruction in the discourse communities associated with the nursing profession. These students are going to replace older nurses in hospitals and health care facilities. It is easier to transition both for experts and new nurses with the knowledge of prior training and understanding. Swales defined six characteristics that define a discourse-community. The nursing profession adheres to these characteristics. In nursing schools, the objectives of lectures and classes are acknowledged, which is related to an ‘agreed-upon set of public goals. In addition, nurses aim to provide effective and efficient care for all patients they treat. Nursing’s goal is to promote health and treat or manage diseases and infections. At Brooklyn Hospital, I love seeing my patients’ positive outcomes and the important role we play in their lives. In addition to continuing education, the nursing discourse community offers it for both nurses and patients. The nursing profession is able to engage in many different participatory mechanisms. For a nursing discourse community to be successful, it must combine a high level expertise with new graduates. Kimberly Williams, in her book “Nursing: A Discourse Community”, said that one could find that older nurses “eat” their younger colleagues. This means that a new graduate would need to assert themselves and make a statement for himself or herself since they have a right to join the nursing discourse community. In order to grow into experienced nurses, beginners must be able to take a stand for themselves.

The nursing discourse community uses two types of mechanisms or genres, which are often combined. Charting and Technology would be two examples. Charts and tables are the foundation of all information that nurses receive. Writing is important at Brooklyn Hospital. It’s second in importance to the quality of care provided to patients and the community. The life of a patient can be negatively affected if the documentation of care is not properly done. Written information can change if it’s not properly documented. Charts and table are used for storing information such as the type of medication you’re taking, your blood-pressure, or temperature. They are an excellent way to organize information so that all nurses and medical personnel can read and understand it.

When charts and tables first became available to nurses, they were kept in files and all written by hand. In order to check the medical history of a patient, nurses had read all the charts in the previous visits. By using technology, nurses can now take a computer with them from patient-to-patient to track past visits and record the current one. Brooklyn Hospital does not use iPads, but desktop computers running a particular computer program. The information can be better organized and retrieved. All information stored in a database can be erased if the hospital’s system is damaged. The computer can have its own mind and crash, deleting all the information stored on it. It is likely that the company has a recovery team to prevent incidents like this. However, you can never be 100% sure with technology. Charts can be a good way to organize the data and information of nurses, but they are not able to hold the entire information required by medical staff and nurses.

The use of telephones is another technology genre. In hospitals, nurses need to be able use the telephone in order to do their jobs. The size of hospitals makes it impossible for nurses to move around the hospital to locate the people they need, such as a surgeon, doctor, or pharmacist. Telephones are essential for nurses who need to consult doctors, ask questions or have an emergency. They can also call surgeons to perform life-saving surgeries. Also, nurses can use the telephone to contact pharmacists in order to obtain prescriptions for their patients. Telephones are useful for nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers.

The participatory mechanisms of each discourse group are there to address any flaws or problems that may arise. There are currently many major conversation topics within the nursing community. The debate over whether nurses need more education is the most controversial issue right now. Some say that all nurses need is a 2-year degree, while others believe they should have a bachelor’s.

Other hot topics today include compensation, workplace violence and hazards. On the topic of compensation, some nurses have been upset that they aren’t being paid equally across the United States. It’s said that there’s also a gap in wages between men and woman. The nurses who are afflicted by workplace violence want to charge them with a crime each time. In the case of short staffing, nurses are concerned about reducing the number at which they must care for each patient. Not only do nurses work long hours, they also often have to work in back-to-back or extended shifts. This can lead to fatigue and dissatisfaction among patients. Nurses are also exposed to germs that cause colds and flu due to the hazards of their workplace. Some nurses are asking medical facilities to supply antiviral facemasks so that they can protect against the germs and viruses they are constantly exposed to.

Discourse communities are a vital part of our lives. Discourse community describes how we communicate and act with others. Nursing is a profession that has a distinct discourse community. All nurses are part of this group. It is essential for nurses to be able to communicate and work together in a community. Nurses use a variety of genres to communicate with one another. Charts/tables or telephones are two of the genres. There are many different ways to communicate between nurses and doctors. If you’re not familiar with the nursing community, or haven’t been exposed to them often, it is unlikely that you can understand their language and their shared goals. This group of medical professionals has goals that they all share, intercommunication mechanisms, participatory mechanisms and genres used to reach those goals. They also have members who are well-educated and experienced. Swales’ rule of six characteristics can therefore be used to label this group as a discussion community.
